One of my favourite sailing spots in the UK. I always launch Cardonness Holiday Park as I have a place there and I think you can pay parking fees and access the beach if you are just visiting (about £3). Works best in S - SW (straight up the bay) but it can be sailed in all wind directions if you are prepared to wobble out to the wind line. It's bump and jump sailing, great for jumping. Alternatively you can launch from the other side of the bay at Sandgreen but not sure of charges. Bay is fully tidal and can be sailed a couple of hours either side of HT.
Gatehouse of Fleet is a lovely village with nice pubs and B&Bs. Very cheeky 9 hole golf course at Gatehouse too. If the wind isn't blowing there is wakebording on Lock Ken (outside Castle Douglas) and great mountain biking (Gatehouse sits in the middle of 2 of the '7 Stanes MTB trails). All in all a top place for a holiday.
